Angela gave me a book on dieting for Christmas two years ago. Good intentions aside, I did start the book but never made it to the end. In January I dug it out of from under a stack of other books I had started and stopped determined to truly read it through--and learn something.
Need to Know Basics: Dieting-Take the Smartest Step to a Thinner You by Christopher Hudson is a unique read. It is does not taunt any one diet plan, but gives a positive/negative run down of all the popular ones. Instead of just trying to cheer the reader on, Dieting gives practical facts, figures, and how-to tips.
I'll admit it, I've read (or tried to read) diet books in the past and never got far. Too boring and too much medical-ese. Just give me the bottom line--and that's just what Dieting delivered. Here's a few facts I learned:
* Two pounds of weight loss a week is realistic. It will take at least four months to lose 30 lbs.
* One pound of body fact = 3,500 calories
* 500 calories less a week = 1 lb loss a week.
* Body weight x 20= daily calorie requirement
* Morning exercise is best.
* Eat fruit alone--not combined with other food.
There's plenty of cheerleading and even a chapter of recipes if you need some new ones. I'm glad I started off the year with this book although I can't say I've lost any weight yet. It is good to have facts and information instead of the hype of other dieting books. Thanks Angela for a good read!

Snow Day Fun
It's snowing--again! In all our years in Georgia I do not recall one with so much snow. For those of you in colder climates who are sniggering--an inch IS a lot of snow here! Presently we have that much on the ground and if the weatherman's predictions hold true, at least 10 more hours of it ahead.
While not a complete 'snow day' at our house, we are a bit laid back today. I thought I would share some of my favorite finds online this week.

Cute Bag Giveaway
Leigh Ann and Sherra over at Find Your Sock Yarn are giving away a cute reuseable grocery bag. I applaud efforts to go green, but let's face it with four kids I would spend a fortune buying enough green bags to take to the grocery store each week. Here's a way to win one of Leigh Ann's cute ones for free! IF I win I can't wait to have a new pretty library bag. Our current green REI bags are just not pretty! Hurry on over today because the giveaway closes Wednesday, March 3 at midnight PST. Click here to register.
Christianaudio.com
This month Christian Audio is offering TWO free audiobook downloads to help us prepare our hearts for Easter. Click here to download your free audiobooks.
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
"When Christ calls a man, he bid him come and die." While I've read a bit on the life of Bonhoeffer, I have not read any of his books so this is particularly exciting. Martyred in a German prison in 1945, Bonhoeffer preached the Gospel at all cost.
Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die by John Piper.
It seems everyone but myself has read a book by John Piper. I'm looking forward to listening to this audio during March.
Enjoy your snow day!

When Faith and Politics Collide

I've told myself for years politics go only as far as the kitchen table debates my Dad and I have when we visit one another. My reporter's notebook got packed away years ago and I vowed to live my life blissfully not caring about small town shenanigans again.
That is until the city council here rezoned our residential area for industrial manufacturing.
That's right--come visit us on beautiful Lake Lanier--and take that red light quick in case the 18-wheeler behind you can't stop.
G-R-E-G....WHERE is THAT box of notebooks???
For those of you from you-know-where, the scandal has been killing me. When a local newspaper has to use the television station as a source there's a problem! Just saying.
So, maybe the politicians here are getting a bit of my frustration from left-over city hall days in you-know-where.
Nothing like those sweet memories...
Getting called into the mayor's office and told to lay-off the bootlegger.
Getting called into the mayor's office and told to stop trying to get into the bootlegger's new porn video establishment.
Being given a marijuana leaf as a souvenir after a drug raid by the Sheriff.
Good times, good times.
NOT!
And no, I don't have the marijuana leaf.

I threw it away a few years after the Sheriff was hauled off to prison.
I drove the mayor batty all those years ago--he drove me crazy with his syrupy spills. A true politician through and through--he could talk out of both sides of his mouth with a smile. He would mention my Grandpa and imply he knew the Lord too. I would smirk and sometimes laugh.
My Grandfather on the other hand was much kinder, gentler, and even loving towards him.
When Grandpa died, it was the Mayor who told me with real tears (yes, real ones--I'd been around the block with him long enough to know the real thing) the impact my Grandfather had on his life.
Grandpa wasn't anyone special in the community, but he loved and faithfully planted Gospel seed. He would call the Mayor and tell him straightforwardly he needed to repent of his sins and give his heart to Christ. He would also remind him of his responsibility to be a godly leader. The Mayor told me he knew Grandpa sincerely cared for the condition of his soul--and no one else talked as truthfully to him.
It wasn't too many years after Grandpa died that I heard the Mayor was serving the Lord--in spirit and truth, not just in name.
When it comes to politics I long for a kinder heart that sees a field for planting--and harvesting. This is one area where I can become completely distracted and get off-focus.

(Did I tell you about having to go through Fox News detox last year?)
There is a place for believers in politics and our voice does need to be heard. Some say we should just pray. Others say we should keep quiet. I think I'll try to follow Grandpa's example--pray and speak the truth in love.
Help me Lord.
When faith and politics collide let it be faith that shines true.
